Dermot has extensive experience in general practice including litigation, probate, health law, mental health law, family law, planning & development law, land law, public law & administrative law, and a past president of the Midlands Solicitors Bar Association. Dermot has particular expertise in advising on the Nursing Homes Support Scheme (fair deal) and assisted decision making. He is a trained commercial mediator
Circuit and High Court litigation experience includes personal injury and fatal injury litigation including cases involving industrial accidents and diseases, contentious land law cases, contentious probate actions; employment and equality claims, law of defamation, contentious employments law cases and judicial reviews. He is a member of the Employment Law Association of Ireland.

Dermot established his own practice in 1987 and acquired the former practice of Goodbody & Kennedy, Solicitors in 1989.
In addition to providing a comprehensive range of legal services to public and private clients, Dermot has provided operational legal services to the HSE (and formerly the Midland Health Board) for over thirty years.

Dermot is retained by the Head of Advocacy at the HSE National Advocacy Unit to review investigation reports, prior to release, and his advices include consideration of issues of natural justice, constitutional law, data protection law, employment law, privacy and the law of defamation.
Dermot was appointed a Legal Representative by the Mental Health Commission at the commencement of the Mental Health Act, 2001 and has appeared before hundreds of Mental Health Tribunals since November, 2006.
Dermot has expertise in Employment Law and providing Human Resources advice to private client, public bodies and corporate clients. His work involves managing a high volume of cases, and giving objective and balanced advice (more commonly without Counsel) within strict deadlines, and advising on urgent, novel and complex issues.
